Now that the iPhone 3G S and OS 3.0 are out, we’ll give you the scoop on how all of the new features work. Also get a recap on the recently completed Podcamp Ohio.

PodcampOhio

Mike went to Podcamp Ohio last weekend. He provides a recap of the event.

Find a podcamp in your area.

Trying to get into podcasting but intimidated by all of the hardware choices? Turn to the Podcast Answer Man, Cliff Ravenscraft. You can get a lot of great info from his podcasts. Plus, he offers consulting (for a fee) if you need some one-on-one help. You can listen to his shows right from the website or subscribe via iTunes with a single click.

iPhone 3.0/iPhone 3G S

Stephanie joins us for this segment as we review the iPhone/Touch 3.0 update.

John and Tom are now part of the iPhone/Touch revolution. Moo hoo ha ha ha!

We’ll cover the new features included in the OS 3.0 update.

We’ll also talk about some of the features that are exclusive to the new 3G S phone, like video recording and voice dialing.

Tom and Steph share some of their favorite iPhone apps. Tom has already found a couple of handy ones after only three days of having his phone!

Tom loves Star Walk, Camera Zoom and SleepMaker Rain Free.

Stephanie uses White Noise and Easy Relax (free and paid versions available)

The Find My iPhone app works pretty well.

Tom had an unusual problem charging the iPhone but it seems to have corrected itself. We’ll have to keep an eye on this one.

Besides the landscape keyboard, Steph’s favorite new feature just might be the ability to sync notes back to her computer. She also likes the ability to get movies and videos on her touch without having to do so through iTunes. Redeeming iTunes gift cards from the Touch is also new.

Nerd Site of the Week

Stanford University has a very popular class (CS193P: iPhone Application Programming) on iTunes University.

Movie Quote

“What does the Omega 13 device do?” – Commander Peter Taggart, Galaxy Quest

Other Links:

John and Stephanie were talking on a Snowball from Blue Microphones.

I had a great time at PodcampOhio 2009 over in Columbus. Many thanks to the volunteers and organizers who made everything very nice for us. A tweet indicated that 184 people attended the show today. That is not bad. And the ones that made it were the ones that really wanted to be there. Why else give up a Saturday in June? It seems that a great time was had by all.

I had a chance to meet the guys from TheAppShow, a podcast focused on iPhone applications and app development. They recorded a show in the morning (great job guys!). I also met Tom Cagley, who does the SPAMcast show. I did not realize that Tom has over 30 years experience with a background based in radio. We all brainstormed over lunch about how to make our shows even better and how we might be able to collaborate. Stay tuned for some announcements here in the near future.

I also thought Krista Neher did a great job with her session (Building a Strong Brand for Your Podcast, Blog or Yourself). She really distilled a fairly sophisticated topic into some important and helpful points that we could all use. I know that she gave me some things to think about that could help us refine the brand of Words from Nerds.

Here are some of my pics taken during the course of the day. Enjoy.

I’m heading down to Columbus tomorrow for a podcaster’s conference called Podcamp Ohio. This is the second annual conference, which is free to anyone that wants to attend. It’s mostly, as you might imagine, a place for techies that are passionate about social networking and podcasting to gather, learn and share experiences. This is my first one but I am excited by the breadth of sessions being offered and the number of people that are going (250+). Not bad for a Saturday in June.

If the UPS driver and Apple follow through on their commitment to get my new iPhone 3G S to my door tomorrow, then I will have it with me for this trip and will be sure to take some pics AND videos and share them afterwards.

Believe in the power of twitter! Thanks to my favorite Internet app, I’ve already had lots of conversations with people going to the show. Included are some presenters. A few of us even have plans to meet over lunch and talk shop. Who knows? Maybe next year we’ll take Words from Nerds on the road and do a live podcast from the show like some people are doing this year.

-Mike
